Explore Stiltsville Learn the History
Explore Stiltsville and Learn the History – in 1933 a man by the name of “Crawfish” Eddie Walker built the first home on stilts just 1 mile from shore, for legal reasons. This allowed “Eddie’s Island Kingdom” to not only sell beer, bait and crawfish chowder but also to become the gambling den, starting in prohibition. Stories of illegal alcohol and gambling in the 1960’s led to police raids of the areas hot-spots including Bikini Club and Quarterdeck Club. At its peak, 27 homes were built but hurricanes and fires ravage many. Today only 7 Stiltsville homes are standing, accessible only by boat and seeming to float on the reflective clouds of Biscayne bays shallow crystal clear waters.
